Use Tax on Vehicles Purchased in Oregon & To Be Registered in Washington?
Can anyone explain to me the use tax exemption? According to the WA DMV, you’re exempt from paying use tax on a vehicle if it was purchased at least 90 days prior to moving to Washington. I purchased my vehicle last summer and the dealership told me that as long as I had it registered in Oregon, I could wait a certain period of time and not owe taxes on the vehicle when I end up re-registering in WA. I also have a valid Oregon driver’s license. Technically, I moved to WA several months before purchasing the vehicle. Does the DMV directly report to the IRS and Department of Revenue that I am claiming use tax exemption? Will they know information about me that I don’t provide? What kind of information will they request in order to prove that I purchased it at least 90 days before moving to Washington? Any info would be great. Thank you.
you will get screwed by the feds if you try to pull that one since there is such a large paper trail on the sale. I live in seattle and tried to do the same thing to save about $5k in taxes and my cpa let it slide and it came back to get me. I ended up having to pay way more in taxes after trying that. Also your license has nothing to do with anything it matters where you live. If you get pulled over and you have an out of state license but you live in the state you where pulled over in and the state in which the car is registered it’s a $469 (in Wa) ticket to remind you that you had 30 days to get a new license.
